How to Glaze Your Bathroom Cabinets
If you are looking to transform and rejuvenate the look of your bathroom cabinets, then glazing your cabinets is a great decision. Cabinet glazing is a relatively easy process that gives your cabinets a rustic and lustrous look. Add an additional, subtle shade to your existing cabinets to get a brand-new look without a lot of fuss. In just a few simple steps, you can upgrade the appearance of your cabinets and highlight their natural features.
Follow These Tips to Glaze Your Cabinets
If you have any experience painting bathroom cabinets, you will find glazing to be a very similar process. For a fresh look to your cabinets, follow these simple steps:
1. Remove All Cabinet Hardware
First, you should remove any hardware from your cabinet doors, including hinges and handles. It is recommended to take your cabinet doors completely off the hinges to make them easier to work with and access, and you can also remove the hinges themselves – but it’s not absolutely necessary for glazing.
Pro Tip: Be sure to put all of your hardware in a safe place, like a plastic bag, so that you do not lose any screws or handles.
2. Prepare Your Glazing Supplies
Gather your glaze and a thick-grade cloth, roller or brush for application, as well as a separate clean cloth. Be sure to test the cabinet glaze on an obscure area, like the back of a door, to make sure that you are happy with the appearance before leaning into the application process.
Once you feel good about the appearance, then it’s time to apply it thoroughly.
3. Apply Your Glaze
Use your cloth to apply the glaze and then gently rub it over the focus area for a smooth finish. You can also use a roller or brush for application, but you should only move in one direction if you do. As you work, focus on one small section at a time since the glaze dries quickly.
Keep in mind that the point of cabinet glazing is to highlight the natural features of your cabinets, so you should avoid adding too much glaze and completely covering the original appearance.
4. Clean Any Excess Glaze
Use a separate, clean cloth to remove any excess glaze that builds up throughout the process. The glaze will build up more in grooves and millwork, highlighting these features even more. How much glaze you decide to leave in these areas is a personal choice based on how you like the appearance.
5. Let the Cabinet Dry
Allow the cabinets to dry completely without touching or moving them. Be sure to give them plenty of time, as reassembling before they’re dried could mess up your look and take you back to square one.
Once they have dried, you can reattach all of the hardware, place the doors back on your cabinets and enjoy the brand-new look!
